Saint George slaying the dragon, as depicted by Paolo Uccello, c. 1470
A dragonslayer is a person or being that slays dragons. Dragonslayers and the creatures they hunt have been popular in traditional stories from around the world: they are a type of story classified as type 300 in the Aarne–Thompson classification system. They continue to be popular in modern books, films, video-games and other entertainments. Dragonslayer-themed stories are also sometimes seen as having a chaoskampf theme - in which a heroic figure struggles against a monster that epitomises chaos.
Description[edit]
Andromeda Chained to a Rock by Gustave Doré (1869).
A dragonslayer is often the hero in a 'Princess and dragon' tale. In this type of story, the dragonslayer kills the dragon in order to rescue a high-class female character, often a princess, from being devoured by it. This female character often then becomes the love interest of the account. One notable example of this kind of legend is the story of Ragnar Loðbrók, who slays a giant serpent, thereby rescuing the maiden, Þóra borgarhjörtr, whom he later marries.
There are, however, several notable exceptions to this common motif. In the legend of Saint George and the Dragon, for example, Saint George overcomes the dragon as part of a plot which ends with the conversion of the dragon's grateful victims to Christianity, rather than Saint George being married to the rescued princess character.
In a Norse legend from the Völsunga saga, the dragonslayer, Sigurd, kills Fafnir - a dwarf who has been turned into a dragon as a result of guarding the cursed ring that had once belonged to the dwarf, Andvari. After slaying the dragon, Sigurd drinks some of the dragon's blood and thereby gains the ability to understand the speech of birds. He also bathes in the dragon's blood, causing his skin to become invulnerable. Sigurd overhears two nearby birds discussing the heinous treachery being planned by his companion, Regin. In response to the plot, Sigurd kills Regin, thereby averting the treachery. [1]
Mythologists such as Joseph Campbell have argued that dragonslayer myths can be seen as a psychological metaphor:[2]
'But as Siegfried [Sigurd] learned, he must then taste the dragon blood, in order to take to himself something of that dragon power. When Siegfried has killed the dragon and tasted the blood, he hears the song of nature. he has transcended his humanity and re-associated himself with the powers of nature, which are powers of our life, and from which our minds remove us.
..Psychologically, the dragon is one's own binding of oneself to one's own ego.'[3]

'So Lucy have you finished a new chapter of your book yet?' Levy asked Lucy while the two sat at the bar waiting for Mira to come back with their drinks. So far Lucy would only let Levy read her book, only when it was done though.
Which it wasn't.
So Levy was very anxious.
'No not yet I haven't been able to concentrate with Natsu hovering around me like a fly.' Lucy sighed. Natsu hasn't left her alone for some reason. Day and night he's been by her side. He just won't listen! He even sleeps with her.
Not like that you pervs.
At least right now he was fighting with Gray so Lucy got some alone time.
'Yeah I noticed that, why has he been around you so much?' Levy asked. Lucy shrugged. She had no idea. It's been happening for a week now.
Even when she tells him to leave her alone, he won't.
Stupid Natsu.
'Hey Luce sorry I took so long, ice stripper over there just wouldn't accept defeat.' a voice said, a very annoying voice at that, from behind Lucy. Suddenly an arm was draped around her shoulder. Making Lucy eye roll and Levy giggle.
'Are you kidding me? I so won flame brain!' Gray yelled from across the guild, still in his boxers.as always. Levy rolled her eyes at Gray's nakedness. She's known him since he was just a kid and he hasn't grown out of that bad habit.
Well to most people it was bad.
But not to the girl hiding behind a wall post spying on Gray.
The girl could be a pervert sometimes but Levy could tell Juvia loved him more then anything.
Heck everyone knew that.
'Hey fire breath you aren't the only one who gets to put their arm around someones shoulder!' Gajeel scoffed then flung his own arm around Levy.
Now it was Levys turn to roll her eyes.
Gajeel would start a fight with Natsu on just about anything.
'Well my girl is cuter then yours!' Natsu bragged making Lucy blush. She knew he had no idea what he was saying but it was still sweet. Kind of.
'Are you kidding? Sure your girls got a bigger chest but mine is the prettiest here!' Gajeel replied, yelling it so the whole guild could hear. Levy was blushing like a maniac and Lucy shrugged as if to say 'Boys.'
Natsu opened his mouth to say something else but he was cut off by the sound of the doors opening.
'Hello Fairies,' a familiar voice said as the guild doors opened. Everyone in the guild turned their heads to see the twin dragon slayers of Sabertooth.
The ones that Natsu and Gajeel beat. Well Natsu beat anyways, Gajeel was on a mine cart.
'Rogue and I have a proposition to offer.' Sting announced from the doorway, he looks smug. As always. Rogue on the other hand looked away boredly.
'We challenge your dragon slayers to a BATTLE OF THE DRAGON SLAYERS!' Sting yelled gaining most of the people's attention in the guild. Especially two dragon slayers.
'I'm so in!' Natsu yelled removing his arm from Lucy's shoulder much to her relief. He was uncomfortably warm.
'Me too!' Gajeel announced not removing his arm from Levy's shoulder though. Levy sighed while Lucy laughed at her. At least the two were forgetting about their little contest before.
'May I join?' Wendy asked, her cat Carla shook her head though.
'I wouldn't Wendy, let the boys have their fun.' Carla explained making Wendy pout. Carla didn't back down though. She wasn't falling for Wendy's puppy eyes again.
Not this time.
'Besides we've got a mission to go on remember?' Carla said and Wendy's eyes light up.
Dragon Slayers Vs Dragons Game
'Oh yeah!' she exclaimed remembering the mission of regathering cute little puppies (Carla disagreed to it but Wendy wanted it) that escaped.
'And I don't believe you have any other dragon slayers so..the battle starts tomorrow at noon in the park!' Sting announced, a blonde haired man stood up from his seat at the bar, Mira frowned since the blonde haired man was just flirting with her and she may or may not have liked it.
'I'm a dragon slayer too.' Laxus said. Sting sweat dropped a bit. This guy was a dragon slayer? One of the strongest mages in the strongest guild in Fiore? This guy single handedly took out the top members in a DARK guild, Raven Tail.
'You..you are?' Sting asked a bit nervous, at least for a second before he put his original smug look on his face. Not because he was feeling smug, there were just hot girls in this guild.
'I am a second generation dragon slayer yes, I would like to participate.' he said before putting a little smirk on his face. Now Laxus was feeling smug.

'It's decided then,' Makarov said standing up on the counter of the bar 'You five will be participating the winner has all the other dragon slayers waiting on them hand and foot for a week. You each can also pick a cheerleader!'
Natsu and Gajeel looked at the two girls they were with before.
'Wait what, we never dec-' Sting started to say but Makarov cut him off.
'Everyone here will help make the stands and booths it must be done by tomorrow!' Makarov yelled earning cheers from his guild mates.
Sting and Rogue stood there motionless.
Hand..and foot? This was only supposed to be a small thing! Rogue thought to himself and glared at Sting who shrugged. The two then left the guild.
'Lushiii,' Natsu called her name walking over to her all innocent like.
Uh oh Lucy thought.
'You are my cheerleader!' Natsu exclaimed excitedly. Lucy let out a big sigh then gave him puppy dog eyes, not as cute as Wendy's but cute enough.
'Could.I please not be it?' Lucy asked. Puppy eyes had no affect on him. Not when he could do the best ones.
'Could you.please be my cheerleader?' Natsu asked his puppy eyes gleaming into Lucy's soul pulling at her heart strings.
No..she..she couldn't fall..for it!
'Fine,' she sighed. She knew she couldn't fight Natsu. Not when it came to cuteness.
That didn't come out right.
'Shrimp your my cheerleader.' Gajeel demanded his arm still over Levy. She sighed. Unlike Lucy, Levy wasn't even going to try and fight it. Gajeel gets what he wants.
'Mira?' Laxus said sitting down again and drank his drink.
'Sure sure I'll be your cheerleader.' Mira replied rolling her eyes. She secretly wanted to. She's seen cheerleaders before and thought it looked absolutely amazing. All the flips and just being able to cheer for your team, or in this case one of her friends.
Friend..that word sounded wrong.
She wanted a different word for that.
'So what's with the cheerleaders?' Cana asked Makarov before drinking ANOTHER barrel of beer. Man she loved beer. It was just soo good. Beer was delicious.
'Just wanted to watch Lucy and Levy suffer.' Makarov laughed remembering eaves dropping about the conversation he heard them talking about.
~Flashback~
'The master was making goo goo eyes at Mira again, he's a bit old for that isn't he?' Lucy asked Levy making the girl giggle.
'Yeah he is but he's such a pervert too!' Levy replied and Lucy shuddered thinking about the times Makarov has been perverted towards her.
~Flashback over~
'They called me old,' Makarov scoffed crossing his arms then looking away.
Some people just had no respect for their elders.
Mira, Levy, and Lucy are going to be in super hot outfits tomorrow though!
So yeah started another new story, I know I'm awesome ;D. Also you guys can name some contests you would like to see here, I may use some ideas (and give you credit of course.)
Anyways see yeah later.

Dragons were ancient, intelligent, powerful creatures, as feared as they were admired in Middle-earth. Their exact origin is debated, though it was clearly stated that they were created by Morgoth in some sense, millennia before the events of The Hobbitand The Lord of the Rings.
History
Dragons lived throughout the First, Second, and Third ages of Middle-earth and may have lived longer. They were originally bred by Morgoth during the first age to serve as gigantic shock troopers and mobile artillery. The first dragon ever seen in Middle-earth was Glaurung, the father of dragons, who Morgoth used to great effect during the fourth and fifth battles in the War of the Jewels. Like most of the creatures made or twisted by Morgoth, they were capable of reproducing naturally. Dragons were sometimes referred to as serpents, great Worms, or simply Drakes, with the first two specifying the Wingless Dragons.
During the First Age, the greatest heirloom of the house of Hador was the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin, which was a helm of great weight that had as its crest an image of the head of Glaurung the Dragon. [4]
The dragons of the Second Age and Third Age were a blight upon the Dwarves and all those who hoarded treasure. Some, like Smaug the Golden and Scatha the Worm, went from the Withered Heath and invaded Dwarven kingdoms. Before the coming of Smaug, there had not been notable activities observed during the Second Age, but dragons seemingly kept serving as dark servants (partially at least).[5]
There was an inn in The Shire called The Green Dragon, and a type of flower and firework called a Snap Dragon. For Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday, Gandalf made a special dragon firework.[6]
It is presumed that, after the death of Smaug in the Third Age, the great dragons had become extinct. According to Gandalf, the fire-drake race survived until at least just before the War of the Ring, and some lesser kin survived even after the war. It may have been possible that some races of dragon still existed throughout the Fourth Age.[7]
Types of Dragons
The taxonomic system for Dragons in Middle-earth is based on two factors: means of locomotion, and fire breathing.
- Fire. Depending on whether a Dragon can breathe fire, it might be termed
- Urulóki (Urulokë, Fire-drakes) - fire-breathing serpent-like Dragons with or without wings
- Cold-drakes - Dragons who could not breathe fire
- Smoke-breathing Dragons - Cold-drakes that could not breathe fire, but had the ability to breathe a mist and smoke.
- Means of locomotion
- Winged Dragons - Dragons that had four legs but also wings which enabled them to fly.
- Wingless Dragons - Dragons with no wings that walked on four legs. Spark-dragons are possibly categorized in this group.
- Serpent-like Dragons - Dragons with no legs and no wings, such as the Wyrms/Long-worms (and perhaps the Sea-serpents).
Some Dragons could not breathe fire and were known as Cold-drakes. Of these most could not breathe anything at all, but some few could breathe a smoke or vapor or mist. In particular many Dragons without legs or wings were Cold-drakes. Cold-drakes are not referred to until the Third Age, though that does not mean they did not exist before. Possibly some Dragons, or perhaps some of their descendants, lost the ability to breathe fire in the millennium after the War of Wrath.
Characteristics
Dragons were long-lived, powerful, cunning, possessed of subtle intelligence, had great physical strength, and were covered in nearly impenetrable scales everywhere except their undersides. They also posessed an overwhelming greed for treasure, especially gold, and were well known for sleeping on piles of stolen treasure. By their very nature, they relished not only the theft of beautiful things, but the act of dispossession itself; essentially, it was more satisfying for them to steal treasure from another rather than come upon unclaimed valuables. According to Thorin Oakenshield they had a very keen sense of the value of their hoard, but never themselves crafted so much as a brass ring. Dragons were prone to fits of anger, which could result in devastating effects upon the surrounding land and those living on it. The reasons behind their strong affinity for gold are unknown, but dragons often put a greater priority on possessing gold than on obtaining food, and they can survive not eating (and maybe drinking as well) for decades or perhaps centuries. This suggests that jewels may be primal sources of the great serpents' life forces (though they could also simply possess extremely slow metabolisms, similar to other reptiles but exaggerated).[8]. Due to this fact, dragons of Arda may or may not be immortal in ideal conditions, though regardless they are known to live for very long periods of time[9]. Not much is known about the life cycle of dragons, but it is known that Glaurung, the progenitor of the species, took three centuries to grow from infancy to adulthood, and that he was considered an 'adolescent' after growing for around a century. If Glaurung's development mirrors that of other dragons, then it also takes a great deal of time for their scales to become hard, as Glaurung's could still be penetrated by arrows after a century of development.
Many accounts of interaction between dragons and other beings makes mention of them speaking, using the Common Tongue. In conjunction with this, they also possessed a hypnotic power known as the 'dragon-spell', by which weaker-willed beings could be put into a trance or bent to a dragon's will when the beast spoke. Even those of strong will could be subjected to this ability, especially if they were not prepared for it. Dragons could make even greater use of this ability through psychological manipulation, increasing the power of the spell by taunting a subject with knowledge of some inner conflict on the part of the subject. Glaurung, for instance, was not fully capable of bending Túrin to his will, but when the dragon began to taunt him with his own failings, Túrin became far more receptive to the dragon's suggestions. In addition, this dragon-spell seems to have had the ability to plant mistrust in the listener's mind. This power also extended to a dragon's treasure hoard, causing it to excite feelings of greed and animosity among others who would possess it. Feuds and battles frequently followed upon the death of a dragon; usually between the individual who slew the beast and the original owners (or their heirs) of its hoard, as well as an occasional ambitious third party. Some have speculated that this 'curse' played a part in Fram's death at the hands of the Dwarves after he had slain Scatha. The same could be said of the famous Battle of Five Armies upon the death of Smaug, though other external circumstances clearly played a significant role in causing that conflict.
Dragons evidently delighted in sowing discord and strife among others, and apparently had a love of riddles and puzzling talk, spending long hours trying to decipher it. Therefore, speaking in ambiguous riddles was the best way to converse with a dragon, as it was quite unwise to either tell the full truth or to directly refuse them. Bilbo Baggins used this knowledge to great effect during his confrontation with Smaug, entertaining him with vague doublespeak in order to keep him mentally occupied and relatively calm.
Dragons had an acute sense of smell. During his encounter with Smaug, Bilbo Baggins was informed in no uncertain terms by the dragon that knew that Bilbo was in the company of Dwarves due to the scent of a 'dwarf-ridden pony' upon Bilbo. However, he was unable to determine what Bilbo was by scent, as he had never encountered a hobbit before. Furthermore, despite his invisibility, thanks to the One Ring, Smaug was aware of the Hobbit's presence by both his breath and the movement of the air he caused in the great hall. Dragons were known to be able to sleep with half an eye open, on the alert for intruders if they were suspicious. The hobbit, his senses perhaps heightened by wearing the ring, also reported seeing a pale ray of light emanating from Smaug's eye as he probed the chamber back and forth for the burglar.
Dragons had strong scales covering the majority of their bodies, which could resist most weapons, though young dragons had to grow into their natural armour. Mithril is said to have been as strong as dragon scales, though lighter in weight. The underbelly of a dragon was described as soft, slimy, and unarmored, and was often exploited as a point of vulnerability in combat. However, Smaug had lain so long on the heap of treasure in the deep of the Lonely Mountain that gems and coins had become encrusted in the slime, so that he was 'armored above and below with iron scales and hard gems'; he was also said to have had scales there too making his underbelly harder to strike at than his back (though this protection was not complete, and ultimately resulted in him being killed). The Dwarves appear to have had some skill at fighting dragons, as seen when they held off Glaurung for a time in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. This was one of the few instances where the battle was not due to stolen gold. The age-old fight between dwarves and dragons was primarily a result of the dwarves placing great value on their hard-earned treasure, and the dragon's habit of stealing it. King Dain I and his son Fror of the Grey Mountains were both slain at the doors of their hall by a great cold-drake. Both races had a lust for beautiful metals and gems, and so, naturally, came into conflict, with the dragons generally prevailling.
A great stench went before Glaurung, and his blood contained some sort of venom, though it is not known if all dragons had these two traits, although the Dwarves commented on the reek of Smaug that filled the Lonely Mountain's halls after the dragon's long stay there.
Dragon fire was hot enough to melt the Rings of Power. Indeed, four of the seven rings gifted to the Dwarves were consumed by dragon fire. However, it was said by Gandalf that no dragon's fire would be hot enough to melt the One Ring, not even that of Ancalagon the Black, the greatest dragon.
Mentioned individuals
- Glaurung - Slain by Túrin Turambar, also known as the 'Father of Dragons'.
- Ancalagon the Black - The mightiest Winged Dragon to have ever lived; slain by Eärendil.
- Scatha the Worm - Slain by Fram, the hoard Scatha guarded was taken from the Dwarves, thus Fram taking it led to arguments and his eventual death at the hands of the Dwarves.
- The Great Cold Drake - A cold drake of great power which attacked Dwarves of Grey Mountains and killed Dáin I and his second son Frór.
- Fire-drake of Gondolin - A large dragon that participated in the Fall of Gondolin.
- Smaug - Slain with the Black Arrow by Bard the Bowman (afterward King Bard of Dale).
- Gostir - a name-only known individual.
- An unnamed individual - Mentioned in 'The Hoard', The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, with red eyes, black wings and teeth like knives.
Dragon Slayer Fairy Tail
In Tolkien's other works
- Chrysophylax - Main antagonist in the Farmer Giles of Ham, although not entirely an evil in nature. One of the most powerful of his kin in his age.
- A young dragon - Resided in Chrysophylax's nest while the absent of the older dragon, and later fought with the original host for a nest, losing to the battle and resulting in his death by being eaten by Chrysophylax.
- Great white dragon - A giant dragon appeared in the Roverandom and is the sire of the white dragons on the moon.
- Great sea serpent - A sea serpent of tremendous size and power, with the body reaches hundred miles. He is described to be 'primordial, prehistoric, autothalassic, fabulous, mythical, and silly are other adjectives applied to him'. He causes a terrible storm by swimming, and powerful enough that 'even the Man-in-the-Moon working hard for fifty years could have concocted a spell large enough or long enough or strong enough to bind him. Only once had the Man-in-the-Moon tried (when specially requested), and at least one continent fell into the sea as a result'.
Speculations on origins
Many theories have accumulated as to the origin of Dragons in Arda.
- One theory is that Dragons were simply beasts physically enhanced by Morgoth, such as corrupted eagles, but there are issues with this line of thought.[10] Randall Johnson has written that: 'Dragons understand many tongues, and they are known for speaking in riddles. Dragons are very intelligent, able to lead armies into battle. Dragons are able to petrify and hypnotize with but a glance of their eyes. Dragons cast spells and curses. Some Dragons breathe fire. These properties and powers are not characteristic of simple beasts'. Another problem is, of course, that dragons did not originally have wings.
- Another, that they were sparks of the spirit of Melkor, has merit. According to this theory, Melkor bred monstrous reptiles and poured a portion of his own spirit into them, giving them semi-independent wills and consciousnesses.
- Another is that they were part of Yavanna's creation; born to be part of Arda's ecosystems just as other animals, or were specifically created to serve as guardians who would protect the harmony and peace of nature like the Eagles. These beasts were then later (or even before the spread of their races across Arda) altered and corrupted by the Dark Lord and adopted into his forces. Gigantic reptilian races such as dinosaurs, Megalanias, Titanoboas, and the Fell Beasts might or might not have shared their origins with dragons according to this theory. This fits with the origin of Orcs, which are descended from corrupted Elves as well as the assertion that onlyEru was capable of unilaterally creating life.
- Another is that they were simply embodied Maiar, as the Balrogs were. This theory avoids many of the problems of the previous ideas on draconic origins. According to this theory, dragons are Maiar, ancient spirits in the form of gigantic, serpentine monsters. The fact that Maiar had the ability to take on corporeal forms has been established previously: Melkor's deadly allies, the Balrogs, were Maiar in the raiment of fire and shroud. The Wizards were Maiar in the apparent form of Men.
- Lastly, there is a theory that dragons are actually descendants of embodied Maiar and beasts (more likely monsters or Nameless Things) much like Ungoliant procreates with spiders. This theory is generally considered to have great strength by Middle-earth experts.[11] Johnson writes: '[this] theory contends that at some point in time, a Maia, according to the bidding of Melkor, assumed a bodily form genetically compatible with an existing reptile. Recall that Sauron himself took the form of a serpent. 'Then Sauron shifted shape, from wolf to serpent, and from monster to his own accustomed form.' (The Silmarillion, pg. 212) This serpent-Maia mated with the reptile, procreating the first Dragon, Glaurung. Glaurung then mated either with other existing reptiles or with other serpent-Maiar in order to reproduce. Eventually, the Dragons became a self-sustainable race.'
Non-canon dragons
When Iron Crown Enterprises gained the licensing rights for games made from Tolkien's books, they expanded the selection of named dragons considerably in both Middle-earth Role Playing and The Wizards, a trading card game set in Middle-earth. Also in the real-time strategy game The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, based on Peter Jackson's film trilogy, there is a dragon named Drogoth.

In The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, there are several types of creatures distantly related to dragons. There are giant salamanders, worms (long, quadrupedal serpents) and drakes (smaller, weaker, less intelligent forms of dragons.) There is also an undead dragon in the game, Thorog, resurrected by the forces of the Witch-king of Angmar to aid him in maintaining control over the Misty Mountains. Though not all dragons were mentioned by name in the official texts, names coming from sources other than Tolkien are said not to be 'canonical'.
In a later expansions of the game, Drogoth the Dragon Lord were featured in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, serving as a commander of goblin forces.
The Lord of the Rings Online: Rise of Isengard, a raid of 12 or 24 players takes place in the lair of Draigoch, another dragon in the Misty Mountains, though much further south in Enedwaith. He, unlike Thorog, is alive, though similarly flies and breathes fire. Another blue-fire breathing individual was portrayed as an ultimate force of Isengard.
In The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, players encounter the dragon Úrgost and must ally with him against Agandaûr.
Drakes appear as rather neutral characters in Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
